Flyer for the YEAR Reception

The Leonard H. Axe Library held its 25th annual Faculty Author Reception on Thursday, November 6th, 2008, from 3:00 to 4:30 in the Library browsing area. The reception continued the Library's tradition of honoring University authors and editors.

As a library, we wish to recognize works of PSU faculty published in paper or electronically. University members that have published since last year's Reception will be honored. Works may include creative publications such as musical compositions, art exhibit catalogs, or audio recordings.

Laura Lee Washburn

This Good Warm Place. 10th Anniversary Expanded Edition, 1998-2008
Greensboro, NC: March Street Press, © 2008

Ten years after its initial appearance on our list, Laura Lee Washburn wanted to revisit the poems, rethink the book, and reissue. This is our first reissue, though I hope not the last.

Laura Washburn's poems make an odd union of the grotesque and the domestic. They suffer a powerful realism while exercising a most eccentric republic of voices. There is something strangely narrow and menacing in the dramatic speeches of Washburn's poetry and yet there's also that wonderful sense "of the voice that is great within us." The emotions, the common scandal of these poems come shockingly close to what we all know about ourselves but nevertheless find unspeakable. This is a young and a brave poetry. -Norman Dubie

Laura Lee Washburn's poems are as muscular as they are personal, a joining of spirited opposites into a singularity that will distinguish her in the world of letters. She is onto something all her own. I read her work with pleasure. -Alberto Ríos
