Friends Banner

The Friends of Leonard H. Axe Library was established to unify the efforts of those interested in participating in Library activities and in improving Library services for the academic and public community of Pittsburg, Kansas. The goals of the Friends include:

Friends Events

The Friends of Axe Library co-sponsor the PSU Faculty Author Reception, held each Fall at the Axe Library to honor the publications of PSU faculty. Our next Reception will take place on November 5, 2009.

Friends also host the Annual Gene DeGruson Memorial Lecture, a series of lectures to honor the memory and work of Gene DeGruson, former curator of Special Collections. The event is held on or around Mr. DeGruson's birthday, October 10th. The 12th Lecture will take place on October 8th at 7:00 p.m. in the Special Collections Department of the Axe Library.

In addition, the Friends occasionally sponsor other lectures and events, which supplement the educational goals of Axe Library and PSU. In the 2008-09 academic year we collaborated with the campus Tilford group and the Kansas Humanities Council to bring two speakers to campus. In the 2008-09 academic year we collaborated with the campus Tilford group and the Kansas Humanities Council to bring two speakers to campus. We also collaborated with the English Department to bring to campus a poetry reading In the 2009-10 Academic year we also plan to be very busy. On October 1st, 2009 we will again be presenting a reading by three poets from Girard, KS, Once again, the English will co-sponsor the event.

For our annual fundraisers, we held seven Silent Auctions from 1998 to 2005. We had materials donated over the years by Jay Leno, Bill Cosby, Jim Carrey, Tony Bennett, Andre Norton, Belva Plain and Jean Auel, among others. We also had lovely paintings and sculptures donated by some of our renowned local artists such as Ted Watts, Joe Prater, Ed Babcock, Linda Lindquist Baldwin (creator of the famous Belsnickles figurines) and Greg Krepps. We had a lot of fun and still miss having them. In 2006, we switched over to our annual Children's Book Festival and sold many fine books for children and young adults of all ages. We had books from such famous authors as Michael Bond (of Paddington Bear fame), Tony Di Terlizzi and Holly Black (who wrote the famed Spiderwick Chronicles series), Robert Munsch (author of the very touching Love You Forever) and Jane Yolen (author of Hoptoad and numerous other books for children.).

In 2006, the Friends decided to host a different type of fundraiser - a Children's Book Festival. The last one took place on April 18th, 2009. Authors from all over the world have been kind enough to donate a representative sample of their work usually signed and frequently decorated with a small drawing or a note. We have books which appeal to youngsters of preschool and elementary school age and others that appeal to a middle and high school audience. The books are not only signed but we offer at 25 percent discount. Enjoy!

This year, we will hold a fundraiser surrounding our 30th anniversary. Our anniversary is, in fact, October 6, 2009 but we are holding our celebration on November 18th, 2009 (date subject to change.) We will have entertainment and guest speakers, but the festivities are in the planning stage, so watch this page.

Friends Spending Projects

In the past, The Friends have supported the purchase of classic books that are either lost, worn out, or not in the collection of Axe Library. The Friends also bought a new Reference Desk, a new globe for reference, funded the publication of the campus history "A Closer Look" and purchased more than 100 films in DVD format to further the development of the Library's new video collection. The Friends are particularly proud of having funded the purchase of new furniture for the Special Collections Reading Room, our most ambitious project to date. We also constructed three very beautiful display units for the browsing area in which we have placed artifacts from the Special Collections department. It is to these and other fine initiatives that money from the fundraisers and membership drives has gone.

If you would like to become a member of the Friends group, please fill out this Friends application form and mail to the address listed.
