Library Resources Instruction
In order to help users fully utilize and evaluate information sources, Axe Reference
librarians provide instruction to classes as well as individuals. Services also include
designing exercises and/or guides to resources and search strategy.
We provide instruction sessions for students on:
- Using journal databases
- Using the Library's online catalog
- Finding resources in a specific subject area
- In depth use of a database
- Developing a search strategy
- Improving web search skills
- Evaluating web and print information
- Understanding the difference between database and web searching
We offer:
- Electronic classroom instruction
- 24 computers for hands-on interactive instruction
- Visits to your classroom
- For a brief overview or demonstration of resources
- Library orientation
- Guide groups through the Library to highlight resources and service points
- Faculty/Library collaborative assignments
- Create meaningful learning activities to develop library and research skills
- Research consultation
- Set up consultation sessions with individual students to help them with research
strategy and searching
- Resource guides for your class
- Complete guides to subject areas
- Bibliographies
- WWW guides
- Faculty training
- Help support instructional activities in the classroom
- Where? - Axe Library Instruction Classroom or your classroom
- When? - Two weeks prior to the instruction session is ideal: this allows
us to create handouts and exercises written to aid a specific class or assignment

The goal of library instruction is to promote information literacy. While learning
to identify appropriate information sources is important, being able to critically
evaluate sources is necessary for survival in today's information age.
