outside of communities of belief and practice, and seeks to enhance its
broad public understanding
- American Philosophical Association
(APA) -
promotes
the exchange of ideas among philosophers, encourages creative and scholarly
activity in philosophy, and facilitate the professional work of teachers
of philosophy. The APA also has Central, Eastern and Pacific chapters,
all of which hold meetings. It maintains a Jobseekers database, and gives
awards for best books and articles as well as for special subjects such
as Philosophy and Computing or Philosophy and Law.
- American Philosophical Society
(APS) -
promotes
useful knowledge in the sciences and humanities through excellence in scholarly
research, professional meetings, publications, library resources, and community
outreach. This country's first learned society, the APS has played an important
role in American cultural and intellectual life for over 250 years.
- Canadian Philosophical Association (L'Association canadienne de philosophie)
(ACP/CPA) -
organizes
scholarly meetings at annual gatherings sponsored by the Canadian Federation
for the Humanities and Social Sciences, publishes a Bulletin and a quarterly
journal Dialogue,
maintains contact with sister organizations in Canada and other countries,
and intervenes in policy issues pertaining to the profession. The CPA is
a learned society made up principally of teachers and students of philosophy,
and is devoted to professional philosophical activity in Canada.
- Philosophy of Science Association
(PSA) -
promotes
research, teaching, and free discussion of issues in the philosophy of science
from diverse standpoints. To this end, the PSA engages in activities such
as: the publishing of periodicals, essays and monographs; sponsoring conventions
and meetings; and awarding prizes for distinguished work in the field.
- Pittsburg State University Philosophical Society -
promotes
philosophical activity at Pittsburg State University by sponsoring speakers,
supporting library acquisitions, addressing philosophical questions through
published writings by its members as well as other students and faculty of
PSU, and taking trips to philosophical conferences.
- Religious Education Association
(REA) -
supports
research into moral and religious development [by organizing] conferences,
workshops, and in-depth studies. Membership includes Baha'i, Catholic, Eastern
