Associations and Societies
- The ARC -
A national organization of and for people with mental retardation and related
developmental disabilities and their families. ARC promotes and improves
supports and services for its constituents. Local and state chapters of
ARC advocate for specific policies and programs that benefit the mentally
disabled and their families. ARC also educates policymakers, people with
mental retardation, service providers, families and others on best practices
and issues that impact people with mental retardation and their families.

(KNEA) -
Kansas chapter of the NEA.
- Keys for Networking, Inc. -
Keys advocates at the community and state level for the rights of children
with education, mental health and behavior problems and their families.
Among Keys' programs are HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool
Youngsters), which helps parents prepare their three, four, and five year
old children for success in school and beyond, Targeted Parent Assistance
(TPA) which supports families with strategic interventions, keeps them in
control and promotes self-advocacy, and family strengthening classes which
are for parents or caregivers with children between 3 and 18 years of age.
These classes aim to prevent violence against the self, violence in the
family and violence against the community by stressing positive communication
and discipline strategies to enhance a child's self-esteem, self-discipline
and social competence.
- National Association of State Directors of Special Education
(NASDSE) -
Organization is dedicated to improving educational services and outcomes
for children and youth with disabilities and their families. NASDSE provides
support to all states and territories engaged in the delivery of quality
education through training, technical assistance, research and policy
development. NASDSE's government-relations staff monitors federal, legislative,
and regulatory activities in order to keep its members informed of new
initiatives that will have an impact on special education programs at the
state and local levels.
- National Education Association
(NEA) -
Educational activist association and labor union, NEA has 2.7 million members
at all levels of education. Raises money for scholarships, conducts workshops
on educational issues for members, lobbies state and national legislative
bodies and files legal actions to protect academic freedom and the rights
of educational employees.
- National Parent Teacher Association
(PTA) -
A not-for-profit association of parents, educators, students, and other
citizens active in their schools and communities. PTA's goals are to
"support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the
community and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make
decisions affecting children; to assist parents in developing the skills
they need to raise and protect their children; and to encourage parent
and public involvement in the public schools of this nation." (Mission statement)
- Southeast Kansas Education Service Center ("Greenbush") -
Through the cooperative efforts of 117 school districts, the SEK Service
Center provides educational services to its members. Among Greenbush's services
and programs are: special education services to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections
and the Juvenile Detention Center in Girard, a film library, repair and
maintenance of audiovisual equipment, interpreters for deaf and hearing
impaired students, science based field trips with the construction of the
Abernethy Science Education Center, inservice training for teachers, etc.

(NICHCY) -
Serves as a central source of information on: IDEA, the nation's special
education law, No Child Left Behind (as it relates to children with disabilities),
