INTRODUCTION
This collection consists of the diaries and correspondence of J. A. Wayland (1854-1912), founding editor of the Appeal to reason, a socialist newspaper published in Girard, Kansas, with office correspondence of Fred D. Warren and company files, taped interviews of family members, and correspondence from Upton Sinclair, Ryan Walker, August Bebel, Eugene V. Debs, and others. The collection includes variant editions of Appeal to Reason, Girard imprints, and an autobiographical manuscript of Patrick Quinlan.
