Q Goes to DUG/HUG in 1998

Lest you think that York is a dark, dreary, damp place, one has to understand that DUG/HUG users create their own ambience and warmth with personality and charm. When that doesn't work, add music, a little Scottish brew, and abandon all sense of decorum! Here, Rob Smith, DUG Enhancements Coordinator; Susan Johns, CODI President; and George Kerr (that's George in his 'jimmie' hat from World Cup Soccer!), DUG Treasurer and former CODI representative (1997, Mesa), experiment in letting their hair down for Caribbean night following a long day of travel, board meetings, and pre-conference stresses. We hasten to add that Lesley Ray, DUG Vice President, was also appropriately dressed for the event, but someone had to work the camera!

If you really want to see the offical DUG/HUG web page, , visit the DUG Home Page. If you want the unofficial Q guide to everything else that went on, arrow downward my friend. Part of the lack of official photos on Q's part was because she forgot to bring a camera; therefore, having film and nothing to shoot it with, she had to acquire a disposable at the National Railway Museum giftshop.

Evening events included dinner with Lesley Ray, DUG Vice President, George Kerr, DUG Treasurer (he's quite dapper, actually when he's not wearing his World Cup Soccer hat!), and Rob Smith, DUG Enhancements Coordinator.

Other dinner cameos include Vaughan Whibley, DUG President; Elizabeth Heaps, Acting Librarian, York University; Steven Heywood, DUG Newsletter Editor, displaying some of the talent that often exudes from those UK newsletters; and Rob Smith, DUG Enhancements Coordinator.

Thursday evening's main Banquet was held following informative tours of the various restoration and display hangars at RAF Elvington, now the Yorkshire Air Museum. Below, a classic Spitfire and memorial display.

DUG/HUG Participants toured the grounds at dusk on a windy but beautiful evening. While restoration showed off the beauty and power of many of the air displays, one could also feel the honour and magnitude of the many who gave their lives in WWII and served at the air base.

After the various tours of the base, we joined together for a wonderful feast, music, and dancing.

Ed and Allyson Riding and George Kerr enjoy conversation at the center table, a stones' throw from the speakers table, which includes Jo Richardson, Amlibs UK; Brian Hackett, HUG President; Lesley Ray, DUG Vice-President; Ron Passmore, Amlibs US; Vaughan Whibley, DUG President; Lord (Roy) Hattersley and guest, our dinner speaker; and Chris Ezekiel, Amlibs UK. George Geddes, HUG Secretary, somehow managed to be just off to the left of the camera shot!

Shelley Neville's table engaged in conversation and dining

Shelley Neville's table was also having a great time!

The evening ended with dancing until dawn (okay, midnight), with Glenn Miller classics to pop and rock, courtesy of the band Shoot the Q (no pun or malicious intent intended, I trust!) And they were fabulous!
